José Miguel Martínez-Torrejón is Professor and Chair of Hispanic Languages and Literatures at Queens College and has been at Queens College since 1997. He has also taught at the Universidade Nova de Lisboa as a visiting professor. His teaching and research have focused on Peninsular and Colonial history and literature of the 16th and 17th centuries, with special interest in the political dimension of literary texts.
Martínez-Torrejón's Portugese research has enabled him to collaborate with Brazilian scholars for several years. As chair of Hispanic Languages and Literatures at Queens College, he established a cooperative arrangement with Portugal's Instituto Camões, aiming at the dissemination of Portuguese language and culture. One of his personal as well as departmental goals has been to complement this program with other study programs in Brazil, which can also lead to collaboration in other curricular areas where Queens College is particularly strong.
