The Welcome New Students Program is an annual event designed to celebrate the arrival of Queens College’s incoming freshmen class. This year’s program follows the tradition of highlighting the campus “Year of” country as the theme. The event features costumed Brazilian dancers and drummers performing the samba; stilt walkers, as well as members of the college administration who will lead students through the campus gate on Kissena Blvd. Other planned activities include a large-scale interactive game, “Playfair”, at 10:00 AM,…

See and hear some of the best known musicians, Direct from Brazil. Open to all, free admission, everyone can participate. Drums will be provided! Direct from Brazil: Gilherme Oliveira and Gustavo Oliveira are bateria directors with Salgueiro. Felipe Cabral is a ritmista with Salgueiro, Portela, Unidos da Tijuca, Porto da Pedra, and Curicica.

Ernesto Nazareth 150th Birthday Tribute

An acclaimed ensemble of eight musicians dedicated to Brazil’s most popular instrumental genre will present a century’s worth of works by legendary composers, including the seminal Nazareth and his lineage: Anacleto de Medeiros, Pixinguinha, Jacob do Bandolim, Hermeto Pascoal, and Guinga. While this repertoire is customarily passed from one generation to the next by aural tradition, Boukas’s arrangements and authoritative transcriptions capture choro’s essential qualities and performance practice values—virtuosic and expressive melodies, keenly interactive accompaniments, and florid counterpoints.
